Laurel & Hardy, one of the world’s great comedy teams, set out on a variety hall tour of Britain in 1953. Diminished by age and with their golden era as the kings of Hollywood comedy now behind them, they face an uncertain future. Stan Laurel was the brains behind the duo’s success. It’s his tenacity that keeps the act together through the ups and downs of the British tour, and all the time he’s thinking up new routines. Their relationship is genuinely moving at times, and in the end this film is a sort of love story.
This affectionate film balances humour and pathos, laughter and tears. Steve Coogan and John C Reilly give stand-out performances, the superb technique of both is matched by their obvious love for the originals. Stan & Ollie pays tribute to a pair of beloved entertainers and highlights the burdens and blessings of a creative bond.
