Director: Charlotte Wells
In the late 1990s, 30-year-old single father Calum (Mescal) takes his 11-year-old daughter Sophie (Corio) to a Turkish holiday resort for a rare trip together. Years later, an adult Sophie (Rowlson-Hall) pieces together the memories once shared with her now absent dad. Sophie looks back with a combination of wistfulness and regret at not having then fully grasped her father’s inner anguish.
Shot in limpid colours, edited with a drifty lack-of-urgency, Aftersun manages the near impossible task of building an engaging drama around an apparently sound relationship. What really sets this film apart is the way it subtly communicates an enormous sadness lurking just beneath the surface.
Aftersun is a deceptively simple debut feature that, upon reflection, reveals endless depths.
