Arrival is based on an award-winning novella “Story of Your Life” by Ted Chiang. When 12 mysterious alien objects appear around the globe, nobody knows if this is part of an invasion force or an attempt to make contact with the human race. Inevitably there are governments who just want to blow them out of the sky. America gives linguistics professor Dr Louise Banks (Amy Adams) the task of trying to communicate with the aliens. We experience the awe and wonder of what is happening through her sense of excitement, fear and exhilaration which are expertly conveyed.
Amy Adams is brilliant as Louise, and it’s refreshing to see a smart sci-fi movie that powers through so strongly and confidently on a character, an emotional human story and a performance, instead of special effects. Arrival is one of the best movies of the year, a moving, gripping film with startling twists and imagery.
