Green Room (18) – 6.30pm

2015 ( USA ) ( Crime, Horror, Thriller )

DIRECTOR: Jeremy Saulnier
STARRING:Anton Yelchin, Imogen Poots, Patrick Stewart

Desperate for some cash, Pat (Anton Yelchin) and other members of punk band Ain’t Rights accept a gig at a remote location where the audience is far from friendly. Everything kicks off when the band stumble across a murder in progress and find themselves struggling for survival against a gang of white supremacists led by Patrick Stewart’s Darcy Banker.

Intense, emotional, and ingeniously twisted, Green Room is genre film making at its best and most original. Patrick Stewart gives an unforgettable performance as Darcy-elegant yet lethal, droll yet terrifying. Saulnier continues to build his reputation as one of the most exciting and distinctive directors working today, with a movie that’s completely different from his previous, highly acclaimed Blue Ruin, but which is just as risk-taking and even more full of twists.

Get Out (15) – 8.30pm

2017 ( USA ) ( Horror, Mystery )

DIRECTOR: Jordan Peele
STARRING: Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Bradley Whitford

Chris and his girlfriend Rose decide to visit her parent’s for the first time. Chris wants to know whether Rose has mentioned his skin colour to her folks, but she assures him it’s irrelevant. At first, Chris reads the family’s overly accommodating behaviour as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter’s interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he never could have imagined.

This is a movie that at times is scary, bloody and macabre, at other times funny enough to qualify as full-blown comedy. However it is always acutely observant of race relations in post-Obama, early-Trump, America. In Jordan Peele’s debut feature, the writer-director has pulled off something special: a movie that is a funny, scary, and thought-provoking thrill ride.
