The Big Sick is a hilarious true story based on the real-life romance of stand-up comedian Kumail Nanjiani (playing himself) and Emily Gordon (Zoe Kazan). After a one-night stand blossoms into full-on love, Kumail finds himself torn between following his heart and the wishes of his deeply traditional Pakistani family, who are expecting (and facilitating) an arranged marriage. Then, one day, Emily lands in the hospital with a mysterious infection. Her parents come to town. Kumail finds himself spending time with them while Emily’s battle grows more serious. Life gets real. The eventual resolution of the various family dramas are not so easy to predict, which leads to a final scene that is surprising, funny and just on the right side of hopeful. The Big Sick has a lot to say — about honesty in relationships, about dealing with parents who are very different from you, about racism both small and big, and a bit about being a floundering stand-up in Chicago.
The Big Sick is an intelligent and hugely enjoyable film which will be looked upon as a comedy classic in years to come.
