2018 ( UK ) ( Drama, Music )
Starring: Jessie Buckley, Julie Walters, Jane Patterson
Director: Tom Harper
Jessie Buckley plays Rose-Lynn Harlan who is a hard-drinking Glaswegian, single mum and ex-con, desperate to make it in Nashville but forced to work instead as a cleaner. Julie Walters plays her despairing but salt-of-the-earth mum Marion who works in a bread shop and looks after Rose-Lynn’s two young children.
Buckley is sensational here. She is a gifted singer-songwriter who co-wrote most of the songs. Her committed performance wrings every drop of raw emotion from her scrappy, flighty rebel in white cowboy boots and an electronic ankle tag. Nicole Taylor’s script is heartfelt and honest, striking few bum notes en route to the crowd-pleasing musical finale. You will cheer. You will cry. You may even tap your toes. The film’s terrific and Buckley’s performance is remarkable. A star is born? More like a supernova.
