ROH, Recorded Live
The first revival of Wayne McGregor’s critically acclaimed ballet triptych to music by Max Richter, inspired by the works of Virginia Woolf and starring Alessandra Ferri and Mara Galeazzi.
DIRECTOR: Koen Kessels
STARRING: Alessandra Ferri, Sarah Lamb, Natalia Osipova
The Royal Ballet’s cutting edge, multiple award-winning resident choreographer Wayne MacGregor received rapturous reviews for his breathtakingly ambitious new work when it premiered last May. ‘Woolf Works’ went on to win him the Critics’ Circle Award for Best Classical Choreography and the Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production. Something of a bridge between traditional story ballets and more adventurous modern work, its three acts are each drawn from one of Woolf’s much-loved novels: ‘Mrs Dalloway’, ‘Orlando’ and ‘The Waves’. These are imaginatively intertwined with biographical elements based on the author’s letters, essays and diaries. The strikingly atmospheric orchestral and electronic music is composed by MacGregor’s regular collaborator, Max Richter.
This first revival offers a rare opportunity to experience what is fast becoming a modern classic.
