2024 (France) (Drama) (English sub-titles)
Starring: Hélène Vincent, Josiane Balasko, Garlan Erlos, Pierre Lotin
Director: Francois Ozon
François Ozon’s When Autumn Falls begins as a gentle portrait of old age in rural Burgundy but gradually reveals itself as a far more intriguing psychological drama. The film centres on Michelle (Hélène Vincent), an elderly woman enjoying a peaceful retirement, whose close friendship with Marie-Claude (Josiane Balasko) provides warmth, humour and emotional depth. Their wonderfully natural chemistry makes the early scenes charming and disarming.
However, the calm surface soon gives way to darker undercurrents. Tensions between Michelle and her resentful daughter, a mysterious case of food poisoning, and the arrival of Marie-Claude’s troubled son slowly unravel hidden truths about the characters’ past. Ozon expertly keeps the audience guessing, layering the story with unexpected twists and moral ambiguities that encourage viewers to question everyone’s motives.
Beautifully shot and superbly acted—especially by its two veteran leads—the film blends drama, suspense and subtle comedy. What makes it worth watching is this clever shift in tone: a seemingly quiet story that evolves into an absorbing, unpredictable tale of secrets, relationships and human frailty.
