A Member’s Choice Film. “A Man For All Seasons” tells the story of Sir Thomas More, who stood up to King Henry VIII when the King rejected the Roman Catholic Church to obtain a divorce and remarry. It is a film of words, discussions, arguments, and accusations. Based on Robert Bolt’s hit play of the same name, it charts More’s resigned martyrdom in the face of Henry VIII’s tyrannical power grabs for supremacy over the Catholic Church in England. Much of the film’s majesty comes from the ingenuity of More’s legal manoeuvrings and their expression through Bolt’s razor-sharp dialogue. At its centre is Paul Scofield’s inimitable performance as More, an enlightened man of principles and integrity in an unenlightened era not known for either.
A Man For All Seasons proved a smash hit, becoming one of the highest grossing films of 1966. It would go on to win six Academy Awards including Best Picture,
