Rachel Weisz is Ronit, a cool NYC photographer, dragged back to her home after the death of her father, a prominent Rabbi. Her family aren’t exactly over the moon to see her. She was shunned from her Orthodox Jewish community for being attracted to a female childhood friend. Resigned to never fitting in or being accepted, Ronit instead finds herself reluctantly falling back in love with Esti (played by Rachel McAdams) – who has spent years building a wall around her sexuality in the name of religion and who, upon seeing Ronit again, makes a life-changing decision.
The director Sebastián Lelio (and co-writer Rebecca Lenkiewicz) present faith and sexuality as an immovable object meeting an irresistible force. One will have to give, but which? Weisz and McAdams both give exquisite and empathetic performances, however Alessandro Nivola quietly steals the show as a decent, pious man in an impossible predicament.
