Love & Friendship (U) – 6.30pm
2016 ( Ireland | Netherlands | France | USA | UK ) ( Comedy, Drama, Romance )
Starring: Kate Beckinsale, Chloë Sevigny, Xavier Samuel
Director: Whit Stillman
Kate Beckinsale plays the scheming Lady Susan Vernon, a beautiful single mother in 1790s England. The recently widowed Lady Susan has no money and no husband but these are only minor inconveniences as she pursues wealth, status and sexual satisfaction. Depending on your point of view, Lady Susan is either an arch-villainess, wrecking marriages and treating her relatives with contempt, or she is the heroine. She is a widow living in a deeply patriarchal society. She has little choice other than to rely on her own beauty and cunning – and the hypocrisy and stupidity of others.
Love & Friendship is an unexpected delight, a very dry and tremendously witty adaptation of a little known Jane Austen novella.

Julieta (15) – 8.30pm
2016 ( Spain ) ( Drama, Romance )
(Spanish with English subtitles)
Starring: Emma Suárez, Adriana Ugarte, Inma Cuesta
Director: Pedro Almodóvar
Pedro Almodovar’s magnificent new film Julieta is a swirling family melodrama, full of reversals, flashbacks, and jarring plot twists. Julieta tells the story about a mother who has lost touch with her only daughter. When searching for her she finds herself investigating her own past.
Brokenhearted Julieta (Emma Suárez) is about to leave Spain for a new life in Portugal when a chance encounter brings her news of her 18 year old daughter she hasn’t seen in over 12 years. A spark of hope is reignited and she decides to stay and write a memoir of what happened years before. As Julieta writes, we go back 25 years and from here a young Julieta (Adriana Ugarte) takes up the story. Happiness is hers for the taking but there are all kinds of omens and warnings that it is unlikely to last.
Excellently acted, brightly filmed, Julieta is seriously good.
