A lot of movies have been made about World War II, but very few have been made about the battle of Dunkirk. In Dunkirk, director Christopher Nolan re-stages 1940’s glorious escape from three different perspectives: land, sea and air. All three strands begin and end together but each one spans a different period of time. For Fionn Whitehead’s stranded soldier Tommy, it’s a week. For Mark Rylance’s Dorset sailor the events last a day. While for Tom Hardy’s and Jack Lowden’s Spitfire pilots, the ordeal barely lasts an hour. Moments on the battlefield can seem to last a lifetime and it’s this dreamlike quality of Nolan’s film that makes it so powerful.
Christopher Nolan has done it again, and his much anticipated Dunkirk is quite simply excellent. Ambitious, emotional, impressive, beautiful, terrifying and superbly cast, it’s a fitting testimony to one of the most remarkable episodes in modern warfare.
