2017 ( UK ) ( Comedy, Drama, Romance )
DIRECTOR: Richard Loncraine
STARRING: Timothy Spall, Imelda Staunton, Joanna Lumley
Sandra (Imelda Staunton) is looking forward to spending her golden years with newly retired, newly knighted husband Mike (John Sessions). But when she discovers his infidelity she runs into the arms of her hippy sister Bif (Celia Imrie). The two sisters are chalk and cheese and have not seen each other in years. Sandra is uptight, snooty and a bit of a misery guts. Bif is free-spirited, warm-hearted and has a definite lust for life.
The humour and sadness co-exist agreeably, Staunton invests every line of dialogue with integrity and her character’s romance with Spall’s Charlie unfolds in a way that’s endearingly, and credibly, cautious. However the ‘joie de vivre’ of these convention-defying pensioners is ultimately irresistible. It’s a familiar blend, with just a dash of daring.
