A French film evening, featuring two films, firstly ‘The Chorus’ starting at 5.15pm. This is then followed by a French style buffet including French wine, cheese, pate and French bread. This second film, ‘Micmacs’ will start at 7.45 pm. The ticket price is £10 and includes both films and the buffet.
Micmacs, a French nonsense word that roughly translates as “shenanigans,” is the apt title of this movie. Bazil (Dany Boon) is our hero who works as a video store clerk. His father was blown to bits by a land mine, and to add insult to injury, he is caught in the crossfire of a gun battle and gets a locally produced bullet lodged in his brain. With the help of some innovative misfits, he resolves to take his revenge on the arms dealers whose products killed his old man and penetrated his cerebellum. The whole thing plays out like a colourful, manic fairy tale, the story zooming through glorious set pieces and enchanting sequences involving Bazil’s wonderfully concocted plans. It’s like an old-school heist movie mixed with the finest slapstick.
Jean-Pierre Jeunet, the writer and director who gave us the quirky romantic masterpiece Amelie, has made another riotously inventive and hilarious movie that is a constant delight from start to finish.
