‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople’ is a quirky delight from New Zealand that combines endearing characters with generous helpings of deadpan humour and leaves a big smile on your face. Set in New Zealand, it tells the story of Ricky Baker (Julian Dennison), a 13-year-old delinquent who ventures into the wilderness to avoid juvenile detention. Thankfully, he is tracked down by his foster uncle, Hector (Sam Neill), a grumpy, taciturn mountain man who knows how to survive in the bush. Before long, however, the two of them are forced to try to stay one step ahead of the authorities, as fugitives, when Ricky’s disappearance causes a national manhunt.
Dennison and Neill form a delightful double act, creating a mismatched duo who are utterly joyous to watch. Their epic adventure is suitably exciting, silly and often very funny. A sweet crowd-pleaser guaranteed to lift your spirits.
