Christopher Hampton’s sumptuous tale of seduction
Director: Josie Rourke
Starring: Michelle Dockery, Dominic West, Janet McTeer
In pre-revolutionary France, the Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont are former lovers who now compete in games of seduction and revenge. The Marquise encourages Valmont to ensnare the innocent, virginal Cecile de Volanges in their web of corruption. However, he has already targeted the virtuous and beautiful Madame de Tourvel. Even so, these two wicked manipulators risk exposing their own frailties in the process.
In 1782, Choderlos de Laclos’ novel of sex, intrigue and betrayal scandalised the world. Two hundred years later, Christopher Hampton’s irresistible adaptation of ‘Les Liaisons Dangereuses’ swept the board, winning the Olivier for Best Play. Josie Rourke’s revival now marks the play’s thirty year anniversary.
