STARRING: Sally Hawkins, Ethan Hawke, Zachary Bennett
‘Maudie’ tells the story of Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis (Sally Hawkins), who became famous for her simple but cheerful landscapes and pictures of flora and fauna. Sally Hawkins is stunning as the meek and stooped Maudie, who battles through her difficult home life and painful arthritis to achieve something close to triumph.
Maudie Lewis was severely disabled and abused as a child. She lived in a tiny house with no electricity or running water in the unforgiving climate of Nova Scotia. Lewis’s rare gift flourishes only after she escapes from the bosom of an uncaring family and riskily throws herself on the mercy of a rough and ready fish pedlar Everett Lewis (Ethan Hawke). He mistreats her at first until their unconventional relationship, based on two misfits clinging together to make the best of it, has bedded in. It’s a touching and unexpected story, with Sally Hawkins giving an incandescent performance as the woman whose indomitable spirit shines through her art.
