The true story of Molly Bloom, an Olympic-class skier who earned fame and wealth but then courted notoriety and disgrace by hosting high-stakes poker games for Hollywood stars, hedge-fund managers and Russian mobsters.
We meet Molly (Jessica Chastain) moments before a freak accident curtails her skiing career. Following her recovery, she halts her law school plans and moves to L.A., where a shady businessman (Jeremy Strong) introduces her to his underground poker games. From there, Molly takes over, upgrades the client list and unwittingly gets mixed up with organised crime. When the FBI raids her home, she hires ethically challenged New York lawyer Charlie Jaffey (Idris Elba) to run her defence.
Molly’s Game rips along at an exciting pace. A sharply judged script stitches together three separate timelines, shaping Molly as a complex and razor-sharp character in a world dominated by condescending and arrogant men. Powered by an intriguing story and a pair of outstanding performances from Jessica Chastain and Idris Elba, Molly’s Game marks a solid debut for writer-director Aaron Sorkin.
