The great Placido Domingo gives his first London performance of this major Verdi baritone role. I due Foscari, Verdi’s sixth opera, is one of his darkest and saddest. At its heart is a father’s realization that there is nothing he can do to protect his family against the world’s cruelties. Based on Byron’s historical play ‘The Two Foscari’, Verdi’s sombre and dramatic three-act opera has not been heard at the Royal Opera House for nearly 20 years. (2hr 35min)
