Where the other giants gorge on humans, the BFG (Big Friendly Giant) roams the world in search of dreams, which he files in labelled jars. The BFG needs a friend and finds one in headstrong Sophie (played by 11 year old Ruby Barnhill), who lives in an orphanage. Sophie duly moves in with him and accompanies him on his rounds, despite the peril this brings.
Mark Rylance is stunningly transformed and enlarged to a colossal scale with start of the art motion-capture technology. It is a thing of wonder to see his trademark nuances, generally so studied and small, magnified to the size of an Easter Island statue. Newcomer Ruby Barnhill is brilliant as Sophie.
Capturing brilliantly the magic available only to children, Steven Spielberg’s big-hearted, family-friendly adaptation is a triumph
