DIRECTOR:  Richard Eyre
STARRING:  Emma Thompson, Stanley Tucci, Fionn Whitehead

Fiona May (Emma Thompson) is a High Court judge who presides over urgent family cases brought under the 1989 Children Act. Meanwhile, her own domestic life is gently falling apart. Her loving but neglected husband (Stanley Tucci) has just announced that he wants to have an affair. Enter Adam (Fionn Whitehead), a poetically pale Jehovah’s Witness with leukaemia. Aged 17 and therefore a child in the eyes of the law, his parents are refusing a life-saving blood transfusion, much to the exasperation of his doctors. Fiona, reeling from her husband’s declaration, takes an interest in Adam’s case and he takes an unusual interest in her…

The Children Act is concerned with love, intimacy and moral responsibility. Stanley Tucci is at his very best and Emma Thompson’s performance, so elegant and vulnerable, carries the picture.
