Jonas Kaufmann headlines David McVicar’s spectacular staging, under the baton of long-time collaborator Antonio Pappano – who conducts Giordano’s epic historical drama of revolution and forbidden love in his last production as Music Director of The Royal Opera.

At a lavish party, the poet Andrea Chénier criticizes the corruption under King Louis XVI, captivating both the aristocrat Maddalena and the servant-turned-revolutionary Carlo Gérard. With the onset of the French Revolution, Chénier becomes a target for his dissenting views, while Gérard rises in the Jacobin ranks. Five years later, the revolutionary government wields cruel power, and Chénier risks his safety to meet a secret admirer, Maddalena, declaring their love. Caught in a love triangle, Gérard must choose between desire and morality when he has the chance to condemn Chénier, testing his integrity and their love amidst political turmoil.
