2015 (UK / USA) ( Comedy, Drama)
Starring: Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Richard Gere, Dev Patel
Director: John Madden
A Member’s Choice Film. Sonny (the terrifically likable Dev Patel) is preparing both for marriage and business expansion, setting his sights on a second hotel in which he and Muriel Donnelly (Maggie Smith) hope to interest investors. Their concept of ‘outsourcing old age’ has been a triumph, and they want to start a franchise. They return to India with the Americans moderately interested, after which the screenplay follows the previous formula — lots of meandering sub-plots, some gently comic, others more strenuously poignant — that were so successful first time round.
Director John Madden is a dab hand at this sort of whimsical yet wise comedy. It’s not comedy with nothing to say: with a first rate cast of British acting veterans, cracking dialogue and sumptuous scenery we have reason to ponder how the elderly are undervalued in Western society. Cleverly written and expertly acted, “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” is a welcome, sunny treat for movie goers of all ages.
