Director: Taylor Sheridan
Starring: Kelsey Asbille, Jeremy Renner, Julia Jones
This moody thriller takes us to the frozen wilds of Wyoming’s Wind River Indian Reservation. The hero is tough, stetson-wearing ranger Cory Lambert (Jeremy Renner), who has been tasked with patrolling the unforgiving terrain for the US Fish And Wildlife Service. While out hunting a troublesome mountain lion he comes across the frozen body of a young Native American woman (Kelsey Asbille). Her grisly death doesn’t appear to feature too highly on the FBI’s list of priorities. They send a single agent from Las Vegas who is so ill-equipped for the case she even arrives without a winter coat.
Wind River lures viewers into a character-driven mystery with smart writing, a strong cast, and a skilfully rendered setting that delivers the bitter chill promised by its title. The dialogue is beautifully underwritten, the soundtrack is moody, cinematography stunning and the casting is faultless.
