When an Iranian film-maker is unable to attend the Academy Awards ceremony, his statuette is sent to his home in Iran, but is lost in transit. The Oscar is discovered in a remote village by a nine-year-old cinephile (Parsa Maghami) and his friend (Helia Mohammadkhani), who attempt to locate the item’s intended recipient with help from the owners of a scrap yard where Maghami helps out.
Winners an entertaining adventure that has a lot going on beneath the surface. A story of magic being found in the most unlikely of places, the shining gold statuette at the centre of the piece provides a stark contrast that will make you think as well as smile. Boasting appealingly natural performances alongside often exquisite musical compositions, Winners emerges as a refined love letter to cinema.
