Starring: Himesh Patel, Lily James, Sophia Di Martino
Director: Danny Boyle
Himesh Patel plays Jack, a useless bloke from Lowestoft who has big dreams of making it as a singer-songwriter. On evenings and weekends, he and his guitar show up at awful pubs, gigs secured by his superfan and de facto manager Ellie (LilyJames) who has believed in him ever since school. But then one night, at the exact moment that Jack loses consciousness due to a road accident, a gigantic electrical storm somehow changes Earth’s space-time-reality to one where the Beatles never existed. Jack wakes up and eventually realises that he is the only human being who remembers the Beatles songs and can pass them off as his own. Hilarity, and much soul-searching, ensues when Jack decides to record some of the band’s most loved songs, leading him to be discovered by pop star Ed Sheeran (playing himself with great deal of humour and self-deprecation). Soon Jack becomes a global superstar with millions of adoring fans, but how much longer can he keep the charade up for?
Yesterday is a a total joy of a film that cements Danny Boyle and Richard Curtis as master storytellers of our time, as well as Himesh Patel as a rising talent who has limitless potential on display.
